Infant & Caregiver Support
Almost every child born to a woman in prison is picked up from the hospital by a family member or friend. These caregivers are not foster parents and don’t qualify for many of the services that traditional foster families receive. We are the only organization in the state providing critical resources, infant supplies, and ongoing support to these caregivers and infants. Building meaningful relationships with mothers and caregivers allows us to tailor our support to meet their unique needs, providing peace of mind for the whole family.
Building Relationships
Our journey begins when a pregnant woman enters the prison system. We take proactive steps to establish contact with the mothers, ensuring they know they are not alone and their child will receive the care and support they need. Mothers rest a little easier knowing that their chosen caregiver will have help and we’ll make sure they feel included every step of the way.
Support Before Birth
We believe early preparation is key to providing a stable environment for the newborn. We communicate with caregivers before the baby's birth, understanding their concerns and ensuring they have access to resources that help prepare them to welcome a newborn into their home. We do a full needs assessment with caregivers and make sure they have critical infant supplies to keep a baby safe and snug in their care.
A Warm Welcome with a Begin Box
Our caregivers receive a Motherhood Beyond Bars Begin Box when the baby arrives. This box contains essential items for a newborn's care, symbolizing our warmth and care for each family. It’s not unusual to see caregivers burst into tears when they open these beautifully curated boxes. You can sponsor a Begin Box here!
Ongoing Support
Food stamps and WIC don’t cover diapers. We promise families a monthly supply of diapers because we know this lifts a financial burden and keeps infants safe (and dry!). MBB collaborates with state agencies, legal organizations, and nonprofits to ensure access to resources like clothing, formula, temporary guardianship paperwork assistance, and help applying for social services. Our support extends as long as families need us.
