Reentry and Reunification

We are dedicated to supporting incarcerated mothers and their children by fostering healthy reunification and providing the necessary education and support for successful reentry into society. Our Caregiver Support Program works hand in hand with this initiative to ensure a seamless transition for both the mothers and their child.

Preparing for Reunification

We understand the importance of maintaining strong bonds between mothers and their infants during incarceration. From the moment we engage with pregnant women in prison, we plan for a successful reentry and lasting reunification. Our approach centers on providing ongoing support for caregivers and creating opportunities for mothers to develop strong connections with their children.

Mothers and Caregivers Working Together

Our program plays a critical role in ensuring the well-being of both mothers and their children. We recognize that healthy reunification requires nurturing relationships and consistent communication. Motherhood Beyond Bars facilitates healthy communication between caregivers and mothers because we understand that this relationship is critical to family stability and the infant’s wellbeing.

Making Communication Affordable

There’s no way for families to stay in contact without payment in prison. We know that the cost of phone calls and emails (each email cost 35 cents) means that some families can’t afford to communicate. MBB provides funds for phone calls, video visits, and emails between caregivers and incarcerated mothers. Our team works tirelessly to facilitate regular communication and other forms of interaction to help mothers stay connected with their infants. We believe that maintaining contact is essential for the mother, but also vital for the child's healthy attachment to their mother.

Healthy, Whole Families

We work to empower incarcerated mothers with the skills and resources they need to reintegrate into society after their release successfully. We aim to reduce recidivism rates and contribute to strong, stable families by providing parenting education, vocational training, counseling, and ongoing support. We begin planning for homecoming from day one by making sure mothers have the vital documents they need once released, a work plan and a safe place to live. We’re supporting healthy, long-lasting reunifications that break cycles of incarceration for good.

Improved Well-Being

Reunification benefits both mother and child through improved well-being, as it provides a nurturing and stable environment. This reduces maternal stress and anxiety while promoting emotional security and support for the child's healthy development.

Secure Parent-Child Bond

Reunification nurtures a vital parent-child bond, vital for emotional and cognitive growth. Consistent interaction and care foster belonging, love, and stronger family relationships.

Reduced Recidivism

Successful reunification reduces the chances a mother will return to prison. Equipping them with support and tools for reintegration empowers them to lead productive lives and break the cycle of incarceration for a brighter future.
