Amy Ard, Executive Director
Amy has spent over 21 years directing nonprofits and small businesses. She founded and owned DC Birth Doulas, the largest doula agency in Washington D.C., before moving back to her home state of Georgia to advocate for and work directly with incarcerated pregnant women and families impacted by incarceration.
She is a graduate of Denison University (BA) and Vanderbilt Divinity School (MTS).
Chloe Cook, Director of Operations
Chloe ensures that the MBB staff is equipped with the resources they need. She is passionate about building strong organizational foundations for sustainability and growth. She's also passionate about budgets, to-do lists, and procedures. She began her career as a business consultant, providing organizational growth and performance management support to organizations, with a specialization in the nonprofit and healthcare industries.
Chloe is a graduate of New York University (BA) and Georgia State University (MBA; MHA).
April Campbell, Director of Program Operations
April joins the MBB team as the Director of Program Operations, supporting the Program Coordinators’ day-to-day work.
April is a passionate Licensed Clinical Social Worker with years of experience working with folks dealing with substance use, mental health challenges, and homelessness. She's deeply committed to disrupting systems that harm marginalized communities and believes everyone deserves love, support, and dignity. She loves working with scrappy, innovative nonprofits, bringing her energy and a "dream and scheme" mindset to find creative solutions. April is all about building and supporting strong, high-functioning teams and creating programs that put the people’s needs at the center.
Driven by a love for social justice and big ideas, April enjoys dreaming up new ways to make a difference and believes that real change happens when we listen, innovate, and work together.
Vanessa Garrett, Director of Client Services
Vanessa Edwards serves as the Director of Client Services at Motherhood Beyond Bars, bringing over a decade of experience working with justice-impacted mothers. A skilled paralegal specializing in criminal, business, and family law, she helps women navigate the challenges of reentry after incarceration. Fluent in Spanish and American Sign Language and a Certified Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator, Vanessa is dedicated to empowering mothers to rebuild their lives and strengthen their families.
Danielle Edwards, Program Coordinator
Danielle serves as a Program Coordinator for the Motherhood Beyond Bars team, bringing a unique and powerful perspective to her role. With lived experience navigating addiction and pregnancy while incarcerated, Danielle’s journey fuels her passion for helping others. What she loves most about her work is the opportunity to change lives and break cycles for individuals who are walking the path she once traveled.
Tara Gazzuolo, Program Coordinator
As a Program Coordinator at Motherhood Beyond Bars, Tara provides compassionate support to mothers in the program, their infants, and the caregivers who nurture them. Tara’s empathetic approach ensures that every client feels seen, understood, and supported on their journey.

As the Development and Communications Manager for Motherhood Beyond Bars, Angela is passionate about raising awareness of and support for the MBB’s vital work. She feels privileged to support the MBB team in their critical mission, using her skills to amplify their impact and share their powerful stories of change.
Beth Lambert, Program Coordinator
Maternal Incarceration & Opioid Reduction Program
Beth supports incarcerated pregnant and postpartum women through peer support, advocacy, and connection to essential services. Her work is rooted in trauma-informed, harm reduction–oriented care, with a focus on fostering long-term stability, diversion, and healthy reunification. Drawing on her lived experience, Beth brings empathy and a talent for navigating complex systems while building trust and collaborative relationships to her role.
Sarah Perry, Program Coordinator
Sarah has always been driven by a passion for helping others and building trusting, meaningful relationships. She is committed to treating justice-impacted mothers as individuals, not numbers, and approaches her work with empathy, a nonjudgmental attitude, and a deep understanding of the challenges they face. Currently pursuing a degree in business and communications, Sarah has also completed resilience training courses to better support families in coping with the traumas of parental incarceration.
Drew Umberger, Program Manager
Maternal Incarceration & Opioid Reduction Program
Drew was part of the first Motherhood Beyond Bars cohort, giving birth in August 2018 while incarcerated at Helms and Lee Arrendale State Prison. After her release, she dedicated herself to working with the unhoused community, focusing on addressing unmet needs to prevent unnecessary arrests. Drew is passionate about diversion and courtroom advocacy, and works to create pathways for justice-impacted individuals.
Joanna Boyles, Director of Monitoring & Evaluation
As Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at Motherhood Beyond Bars, Joanna leads the data strategy to measure impact and improve outcomes for incarcerated mothers and their babies.
With an MPH in Maternal and Child Health and Biostatistics, Joanna brings extensive experience in data science applications for monitoring and evaluation. Her passion for maternal and child health and nutrition has driven her to engage in diverse clinical work, research initiatives, and surveillance projects—all advocating for improved health outcomes on a global scale.
