Breaking Chains of Injustice:

A Triumph for Maternal Rights in Georgia!

Today is the day that shackling of pregnant and postpartum women ends in Georgia! House Bill 345 prohibits shackling, use of solitary confinement for medical observation, and cough and squat searches and it goes into full effect today, October 1st.

Motherhood Beyond Bars brought the lived experience of women to state legislators who weren't aware that shackling was happening and were hesitant to believe it was possible. It is possible, and it's definitely happening.

We worked with the Georgia Department of Corrections to advocate for this important change across the state (in all jails and state facilities). Pamela Winn told her truth over and over until the light overcame the darkness. And we're living in a more humane and compassionate state because her advocacy made a difference.
