Our History

In 2013, with the support of the Georgia Department of Corrections, a group of dedicated volunteers from Emory University’s graduate schools of Divinity, Public Health, Medicine, and Nursing came together to improve the health and wellbeing of incarcerated pregnant and postpartum women and their families in Georgia.

They formed Motherhood Beyond Bars, a name chosen by women in the prenatal education program.  Motherhood Beyond Bars in now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a dedicated board of director and staff.
